One of the worst bottleneck’s in the U.S. is getting a fix: Breaking ground on the 10-mile Fredericksburg Extension of 95 Express Lanes.
Today we joined our partners in Virginia and Branch-Flatiron Joint Venture to celebrate the start of construction of a 10-mile extension of the I-95 Express Lanes.
The Fredericksburg Extension project – known as “FredEx” - will provide new options for faster and more reliable travel along one of the nation’s most congested corridors by
- Extending the dynamically-tolled express lanes from Route 610 to Route 17 near Fredericksburg
- Providing 66% more capacity during rush hours by adding two new reversible lanes along the median which will be available at no charge to HOV 3+ and transit riders
- Delivering new access points for faster and easier access to the 28,000 workers at Marine Corps Base Quantico
The project, financed by Transurban, is anticipated to cost approximately $565 million, and will be accompanied by a $277 million payment to the Commonwealth to advance transportation projects along the I-95 corridor. In addition to reducing congestion, the project is estimated to create 9,100 jobs, and will generate $1.1 billion in economic activity during its construction.
The FredEx project lanes are scheduled to open in late 2022, and will make the network the longest reversible facility in the United States.
