The right environment for Ryan

You might not expect to find an environmental planner working in road construction – but Ryan couldn’t think of a better place to put his skills to use.

As one of Transurban’s environmental planners, Ryan’s job is to make sure the environment and sustainability are considered in every step of the road-building process. He uses his know-how to keep our impact on the natural landscape to a minimum – and in some cases even bring about positive change.

Since he started working with Transurban, Ryan’s key focus has been our NorthConnex project. Such a significant project comes with plenty of environmental issues to keep in mind – from noise and air quality, to vibration and traffic. And Ryan works with designers, engineers and planners to help the project team plan for those potential impacts.

After developing an in-depth Environment Impact Statement, Ryan worked with local residents at community information sessions – keeping them in the know as construction was under way. He still meets with a community group regularly to update them on air quality, and answer any questions they might have.

Recently, he’s been leading a project that takes the spoil from the NorthConnex tunneling – and re-uses it to rehabilitate the 35-hectare Hornsby Quarry. There are even plans to build a community recreational facility on the site. It’s projects like these that Ryan values the most. He’s not just able to look out for the environment – but make sure the community can benefit as well.

And at Transurban, he’s in the right place to make a difference.
