Victoria’s newest road tunnels are getting close to opening, and we’re inviting you to be part of history by helping choose their names.

These two tunnels will play a key role in connecting communities and improving travel in and around Melbourne’s western suburbs, and we're looking for names that celebrate the unique culture, heritage and stories of Melbourne's west.

Every participant will also go into the draw for a pretty interesting prize.

What are we naming?

  • The new 2.8 km inbound tunnel from the West Gate Freeway to the Maribyrnong River, for drivers going to the city
  • The new 4 km outbound tunnel from the Maribyrnong River to the West Gate Freeway, for drivers heading to Melbourne’s western suburbs and beyond.

And the prize?

Eligible submissions will be entered into a randomised draw for a $500 Shell Gift Card and our winner will also have the opportunity to nominate a community organisation or registered charity to receive a $2,500 donation.

Please note that it’s one prize-draw entry per participant, not one entry per name submitted.

Who can enter?

This opportunity is open to all Victorians.

How to enter

Submissions are open now.

To enter, fill out the online submission form or visit westgatetunnelproject.vic.gov.au/nameyourtunnels. Only online submissions will be accepted.

We will consider all names that reflect the spirit of Melbourne’s west. You can submit multiple names. For each name, please include:

  • a short explanation why this name is meaningful

  • which tunnel the name is intended for (towards the city or towards the west).
