We operate three roads in Greater Washington and we have two projects on the go: the 495 Northern Extension and the Opitz Boulevard Connection to the 95 Express Lanes. We also operate one road in Montreal, Canada.

Greater Washington area

95 Express Lanes

The 65-kilometre (41-mile) 95 Express Lanes are tolled, reversible lanes operating alongside free lanes on Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia.

Serving Washington DC and its suburbs, the 95 Express Lanes operate between Stafford and Fairfax counties and connect with our 495 Express Lanes.

The lanes use innovative dynamic pricing – toll rates based on traffic speed and density – to keep traffic moving at a minimum speed of around 90 km/h (55 m/h). Vehicles with three or more passengers, buses and motorcyclists all travel for free.

The lanes were extended 15 kilometres (10 miles) in August 2023, to Fredericksburg, VA.

Completion date

The 95 Express Lanes opened to traffic in December 2014. The Fredericksburg extension opened to traffic in August 2023.

Ownership

The lanes are 50% Transurban owned.

As part of the 395 Express Lanes, we provide USD15 million each year (totalling more than USD75M to date) for transit and multimodal improvements to the area.

The 495 Express Lanes use innovative dynamic pricing, with toll rates based on traffic speed and density to keep traffic moving at a minimum speed of around 70 km/h (45 m/h). Vehicles with three or more passengers, buses and motorcyclists travel for free.

Completion date

The 495 Express Lanes opened to traffic in November 2012.

95 Express Lanes/Opitz Boulevard Ramp Project

Opitz Boulevard is a major arterial road in Prince William County, Virginia's second-most populated county. This project will better connect this thriving area with the 95 Express Lanes. It will deliver a new, south-facing, reversible ramp connecting the 95 Express Lanes with Opitz Boulevarde. The Opitz Boulevard Bridge will also be enhanced, including through widening works and new pedestrian facilities.

This project is part of a development agreement between Transurban and  Virginia.

Benefits

Project benefits include:

  • improved access to and from the 95 Express Lanes for central and southern Prince William County residents, and for those living further to the south
  • faster and easier access to a major retail hub (Potomac Mills) and the nearby Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center
  • better pedestrian access for the Opitz Boulevarde Bridge.

Timing and cost

Major works began in 2022 and the new ramp is expected to open this year 2024.

The total project cost is $70 million.
