Transurban is a pioneer of the public-private partnership (P3) managed lanes concept in the United States.
Led by President, Jennifer Aument, our North American business was among the pioneers of public-private partnerships for major transportation infrastructure in the Virginia region.
Recently, we entered our second market in North America with the acquisition of the A25 concession in Montreal, Canada. The A25 is a 7.2km (4.5 mile) toll road and bridge connecting Northern Montreal across the Rivière des Prairies to commercial and residential areas.
The US business is currently working with the Virginia Department of Transportation to extend the 95 Express Lanes to the north and south. The 395 Express Lanes project will extend the 95 Express Lanes network eight miles north to the DC line by converting two existing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to three reversible high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes by 2020. The Fredericksburg Extension project will extend the existing reversible 95 Express Lanes south by 10 miles, with service open to customers in 2022.
In 2017 a two-mile extension to the south along the 95 was completed.
The Express Lanes have helped address long-standing congestion in the Greater Washington region by providing faster travel options for drivers. During peak periods, traffic speeds on the 95 Express Lanes are on average 40 percent higher than in the adjacent general purpose lanes.
The Express Lanes also encourage car-pooling and have delivered greater travel time reliability. Travel times have also improved in the regular lanes as commuters take advantage of the new travel options.
Transurban regularly conducts safety programs to minimise dangerous driving behaviours on our roads and across the region. These include campaigns such as Orange Cones. No Phones during construction season and our ‘Phones Down’ campaign, which advocates for anti-distracted driving.
The Express Lanes Community Grant Programs are another way we support the communities in which we operate. Since the Grant Program was established in 2008 we have donated more than $786,000 to non-profit organisations in Northern Virginia.
